Hub bearings make the wheels rotate seamlessly, ensuring smooth running of the vehicle.


In the past, they were two separate components. However, in modern vehicles, they are typically integrated into a single unit called the "hub bearing unit." This unit includes the bearing itself, the wheel hub (the part that mounts the brake disc and wheel), and sometimes even the ABS sensor. Therefore, the term "wheel bearing" commonly used today generally refers to this complete assembly.

Humming or roaring noise: A continuous, rhythmic, low-pitched noise coming from the wheel area while driving. The noise increases with speed and may sometimes lessen or intensify when turning (which can help identify which side is faulty).

Grinding or clicking sound: Especially noticeable during low-speed turns, potentially indicating severe damage to the internal balls or raceways of the bearing.

Steering wheel vibration: The vibration in the steering wheel becomes more pronounced at higher speeds, making the vehicle feel unstable or "loose."

ABS warning light illuminates: If the integrated ABS sensor fails due to bearing damage, the ABS warning light on the dashboard may come on.


Normal wear and tear: The bearing naturally ages and wears out after long-term use.

Impact damage: Hitting curbs or driving into deep potholes can cause instant, severe impact damage to the bearing.

Improper installation: Using incorrect tools, excessive force, or improper torque during installation can damage the bearing.

Harsh environment: Contaminants like water, mud, sand, and salt entering the bearing can degrade the grease and accelerate wear.

Improper modifications: Installing wider tires or larger wheels that are not OEM specifications can place extra load on the bearing.


Lane change test: On a safe road, drive at a constant speed and gently swerve left and right. If the noise increases significantly when turning in one direction and decreases in the other, it's likely a bearing issue (because turning shifts the load onto the bearing on that side).

Correlation with speed: Bearing noise is directly related to vehicle speed, whereas some tire noises (e.g., cupping) might be more dependent on road surface texture.

Uneven tire wear: A severely damaged bearing can cause wheel looseness, leading to irregular or uneven tire wear.
